page_limit_exceeded

HTTP 422 · code: "page_limit_exceeded" · type: https://docs.formfeed.dev/errors/page-limit

The PDF has more pages than the plan allows for one document. page_count is how many pages it would have had. The limit counts the finished file, so pages appended with post.merge_after count too, as do the pages of a merge or a conversion. The render is recorded as failed, no file is stored, and it costs nothing.

Example

{
"type": "https://docs.formfeed.dev/errors/page-limit",
"title": "Page limit exceeded",
"status": 422,
"detail": "Document has 212 pages; the plan allows 200",
"code": "page_limit_exceeded",
"location": null,
"page_count": 212,
"render_id": "rnd_7da09ab6cd9946b798c187c2a9350852",
"request_id": "req_4b7c1e9a2f3d4c5b8a6e7f9012"
}

Common causes

  • The data is much larger than expected, for example a report over a whole year instead of a month.
  • A layout problem that repeats content, such as an element taller than a page or a page break inside a loop.
  • post.merge_after or /pdf/merge appends documents that together pass the limit.
  • An office document whose spreadsheet prints across many pages; single_page_sheets puts each sheet on one page.

How to fix it

  • Look at the page count of a preview with the same data; page_count in the problem tells you how many pages it would have been.
  • Split the document into several renders, or upgrade the plan. See Plan limits.

Retry?

No. The same request gets the same answer. Change the data, the template or the plan first, then send the request again with a new Idempotency-Key or without one: a 4xx answer is stored under its key for 24 hours, so the old key returns this problem again. See retrying.
